Sri Lanka – Government approval sees a threefold increase to 24% in July.

According to the most recent Verité Research poll in the style of Gallup’s ‘Mood of the Nation’, more than three times the amount of individuals now have a positive view of the government, economy, and economic direction of the country compared to four months ago.

The results of the survey showed that the government’s approval rating increased significantly to 24% in July, compared to 7% in February 2024. 28% of participants now consider current economic conditions to be ‘good’ or ‘excellent,’ which is a threefold rise from the 9% reported in February 2024. The proportion of individuals who think the country’s economic situation is ‘improving’ has also increased threefold, with 30% of survey participants having this opinion, compared to 9% in February 2024.

The positivity in July 2024 is approximately at the same level or slightly higher than in June 2023, which marked the highest level seen since January 2022. The comparison is explained below.

Government Approval Rating | 24% – When asked if they approve or disapprove of how the current government is working, 24% of respondents stated their approval (with a margin of error of ± 2.73%). In June 2023, the approval rating was only 21%, lower than the current rating.

Economic Conditions Rating | ‘Good’ or ‘Excellent’: 28% – 28% rated the economic conditions in the country as ‘good’ or ‘excellent’ when asked to rate them on a scale of excellent, good, or poor, with a margin of error of ± 2.87%. This occurred in approximately June 2023, when it reached 27%.

Economic Outlook | ‘Getting Better’: 30% – When asked if they believe the overall economic conditions in the country are improving or declining, 30% of survey participants indicated that the economy is ‘getting better’ (with a margin of error of ± 2.91%). This is similar to June 2023, when it reached 29%.

Verite Research stated that the most recent survey was conducted from June 28th to July 6th and included 1,038 Sri Lankan adults from various households, selected through a nationally representative multi-stage randomized sample. The goal of this survey was to ensure a sampling error margin of no more than ±3.04% with a 95% confidence level. It was stated that errors margins may also be influenced by potential mistakes in the implementation process.
