Discipline is necessary for teachers in Sri Lanka: President

Sri Lanka’s President Ranil Wickremesinghe has stated that teacher strikes are harmful and unwarranted, and has requested the Attorney General to suggest solutions.
Nobody should interfere with school education between 7:30 am and 1:30 pm, either directly or indirectly. Wickremesinghe stated at a ceremony at Temple Trees on Wednesday that he has asked the Attorney General to suggest actions for this matter.
“In the future, we will implement more stringent actions in this area, even if it could lead to disagreement,” stated the president as he presented appointments to Education Administrative Service officers and teaching positions to graduates and diploma holders.
It is crucial that school closures or strikes do not impede the education of children.
Certain teacher and principal unions are requesting a review and further salary hikes, despite the fact that teachers have already been given two salary increases.
In 2022, Wickremesinghe stated that during President Gotabaya Rajapaksa’s tenure, the sole pay raise was given to teachers. This year, we offered a financial subsidy of Rs. A total of 10,000 will be given to every government worker.
Wickremesinghe, who was once an Education Minister, stated that due to the country’s economic circumstances, additional raises were not possible.
Without discipline, a country’s education system cannot be sustained. Failing to safeguard it from disruptions will jeopardize the future of our next generation.
“Sinhala-language schools experienced interruptions.” Kids from rural areas go to these schools. Educators in Tamil and Muslim institutions acknowledged the significance of academic learning.
He mentioned that certain teachers encountered threats that hindered their ability to participate.
The children are our future. That is the reason why the government is dedicated to providing the upcoming generation with fresh knowledge and contemporary technology in a shifting world.
He noted that despite facing bankruptcy in the previous two years, the country increased funding for education as we worked towards recovery.
While protests are not new to Sri Lanka, the most recent strike was entirely different, Wickremesinghe said and “do not befit the honourable teaching profession.”
