India plans to offer extra funding for the Madhu Transit housing project.

The High Commissioner of India, Santosh Jha, and the Secretary of the Ministry of Urban Development and Housing, W.S. Sathyananda, exchanged diplomatic letters on 02 July 2024 to finalize details of the Low Cost Transit Housing Construction Project at Madhu Shrine, Mannar, following the GOI’s decision to provide an extra grant of approximately SLR 100 million. The project now commits GOI of more than SLR 400 million.
In response to economic challenges in Sri Lanka, GOI planned to add more funds to nine ongoing grant projects to speed up completion and lessen the effect of high construction material costs on the projects’ original plans.
The project at Madhu Shrine in Mannar is one of the nine projects for constructing low-cost transit housing.
The GOI grant will fund the construction of 96 transit houses at Madhu Shrine for pilgrims’ use. The project is in progress and the planned transit houses are being constructed at different phases
