Health Ministry says: Accidents kill two people every 90 minutes

Fatal accidents in Sri Lanka kill up to 12,000 people or about two people every 90 minutes, the Health Ministry said in a statement.

The accidents involve transport, wildlife, and animals. “The ministry urges the public to be more careful.”

“Four people lose their lives due to accidents every three hours, with 10,000 to 12,000 people dying of accidents each year; it has become one of the leading causes of death.” Samitha Sirithunga, a specialist in the Ministry of Health, said in a statement.

According to the specialist, the majority of the lives lost are between 15-44 years old, Sirithunga said.

“The government will save a huge amount of money if it works to prevent accidents,” Sirithunga said.

“One out of five Sri Lankans face an accident requiring medical treatment once a year,” Sirithunga said.
