President assures: “commitment to upholding the right to freedom of expression”

President Ranil Wickramasinghe emphasized that he will never do away with the right to express opinions, having removed the criminal defamation law, which has not been done in any country in the region.

President Ranil Wickramasinghe mentioned this when he launched the program of issuing foreign passports through the online system yesterday, June 15 in the evening at the Homagama Divisional Secretariat premises.

The President pointed out that if any party is prejudiced by an electronic medium, the proposed Electronic Broadcasting Regulatory Commission Act will only provide an opportunity for the aggrieved party to seek relief.

President Ranil Wickramasinghe also said that such methods are used to deal with electronic media in countries around the world and he has instructed to include the existing guidelines for electronic media in the United Kingdom in the implementation of it in Sri Lanka as well.
