Currency crisis make increase in overall crime in Sri Lanka

Police statistics show that there has been an increase in overall crime in the country amid the worst economic crisis ever. Economists also say that in the face of economic difficulties, impoverished citizens may see an increase in crime and theft.

According to the Police Media Division, an increase in vehicle thefts has been reported.  This year, up to September 2022, there were 1,406 thefts, of which 12 buses, 25 vans, 16 lorries, 14 cars, and 311 three-wheelers were found. have. Also, 1,016 motorcycles and 12 other vehicles were stolen between January and September 2022.

Transport providers and the industry claim that vehicle theft has increased since the industry underwent a spike in spare part costs after vehicle imports were halted.

One Kamal Quintus from Colombo said that one day in the last month while he was parking his Motorbike near a shopping mall in  a very famous Galle road some robber robbed two side glasses of his motorbike and the vegetable bag.

 “I logged a complaint but so far I did not hear a good response.”

Meanwhile, Sri Lanka recorded 435 murders in the first nine months of the year, while last year saw 403 murders.

According to police reports, there has been an increase in shootings directly related to the underworld in the country.

Kandhaiya Kandasami – 60 years old a father of three , a owner of a Cattle farm who lives in Matugama, told Mojo News that the farmers who are engaging with animal farming such as cattle, chickens and goats are also making great efforts to protect their animal farms from the thieves.

 “No matter in day time or and night times, there are many thieves nowadays, due to this economic crisis in Sri Lanka. To fight against the scarcity of food, some people are not afraid to do even crimes.” he said.

Kandasami said also,  that, ” Now we have to spend more money to take precautions to protect our farms from robbers than spending to our daily meals.”

 “At my place we are using CCTV and three lights to give protection to my cattle farm in the night to morning everyday. So the electricity bill has gone up by three thousand rupees than our normal bill.” said Kandasami.
