Strict Action Against Traders Overcharging During Disaster – Essential Services Commissioner Warns

The Commissioner-General of Essential Services, B.K. Prabath Chandrakeerthi, has warned traders not to take advantage of the disaster situation by increasing prices or hiding goods.

Officials say some traders are trying to sell essential items at very high prices, which is illegal under Essential Services and Consumer Protection laws.

The Commissioner says that at a time when the country is facing hardship, trying to make unfair profits is both wrong and against the law.

He also said that legal action will be taken against anyone who raises prices unfairly, hoards goods, or hides essential items.

All traders are instructed to sell goods at their Maximum Retail Price (MRP) where marked, and keep prices reasonable for all other items.
