The Inaugural Session of the Karandeniya Central College Student Parliament Held at the Old Parliament Chamber of the Presidential Secretariat
The inaugural session of the Student Parliament of Karandeniya Central College, Galle, was held yesterday (16) at the Old Parliament Chamber of the Presidential Secretariat.
This programme was organized as part of a series of initiatives conducted jointly by the Presidential Secretariat, the Department of Communication of the Parliament of Sri Lanka and the Ministry of Education, with the aim of providing students with practical experience of parliamentary procedures.
Secretary-General of Parliament Mrs. Kushani Rohanadeera explained the parliamentary process and its functions, helping students gain a better understanding of how Parliament operates. She also expressed her gratitude to the Secretary to the President and all parties involved for facilitating this programme, which provides students with valuable leadership experience in the historic Old Parliament Chamber.
Deputy Chairperson of Committees of Parliament Hemali Weerasekara stated that the Student Parliament will serve as a foundation for nurturing leaders who respect the law, value others and listen to different voices within a democratic framework. She further emphasized that these student leaders should work toward finding more creative solutions when faced with challenges.
At the inaugural session of the Karandeniya Central College Student Parliament, a Speaker was first elected. Thereafter, the Prime Minister, Cabinet Ministers and Members of Parliament were sworn in. Each student minister then presented the proposed plans of their respective ministries to the assembly.
Certificates were also awarded to the students representing the Student Parliament.
The event was attended by Director General of Public Relations of the Presidential Secretariat Dharmasiri Gamge, Additional Secretary (Education Services) of the Ministry of Education Kamal Ariyasinghe, Assistant Director of the Presidential Secretariat Major Nadika Dangolla, Principal of Karandeniya Central College Dilip Kumara, members of the academic staff and officials from the Communication Department of Parliament.
