Church against converting Kachchatheevu island as tourist destination
The Bishop of Jaffna, Dr. Justin Bernard Gnanapragasam, has voiced his opposition on behalf of the diocese against the government’s move to convert Kachchatheevu Island into a tourist destination.
The island is a sacred place frequented by both Sri Lankan and Indian fishermen.
For many years, a large number of devotees from India and Sri Lanka have gathered for the annual festival of the small shrine dedicated to Saint Anthony. Another special feature of this is that non-Christian devotees also participate in the annual festival.
In such a context, the Bishop told the media in Jaffna that any attempt to launch a tourism business on the island of Kachchativu would be an insult to religion.
