The prevalence of childhood leprosy in Sri Lanka needs serious attention _Melani Manel Perera

In 2022, the percentage of child leprosy patients in Sri Lanka was 11.1%, but by June 2023, the figure is reported to be 8.4%, so it is essential to pay close attention to the growth, says Dr. Prasad Ranaweera, Director of the Leprosy Control Campaign of the Ministry of Health.
A decrease in the percentage of child leprosy cases indicates a decrease in the prevalence of leprosy in a country, and also, if the prevalence of leprosy is well controlled in a country, the percentage of child leprosy cases should be less than 4%’ Commenting on the prevalence of childhood leprosy in Sri Lanka, Dr. Ranaweera points out.
Dr. Ranaweera states that reducing the percentage of child leprosy patients in a country is a very difficult task that cannot be done all at once. At least by the year 2030, the percentage of child leprosy patients in Sri Lanka must reach the required minimum target.
Specialist Dr. Ranaweera emphasized further in the press conference held at the Health Promotion Bureau, that this expected goal can be reached only by implementing a formal and systematic program.
