Sri Lankan Samarisi  Community every year, the month of June is celebrated as the global pride month to celebrate the rights of Samaritan and transgender people and in Sri Lanka, the same community organized a pride march and various concerts on June 04 in Colombo.

The theme of their celebration this year is “Freedom Pride Walk”. They dressed in rainbow colors as a group, marched from near Vihara Maha Devi Park to Kollupitiya, displaying placards that recorded the socio-economic issues of their community and the country as a whole.

“In the 70s, this month was the first time the world talked about our community. To celebrate that, the LGBTQ community around the world is coming together and celebrating in this way this month and in July,” said Benny Benett.

“When we turn to the time of the Lord Buddha, there were also trans people at that time. Transgendered theros were also in the Sasana, and there were Mehenin. It is written in the Buddha Sasana,” Chanu Nimesha, a transgender woman social activist, told the media.

 

“Try to understand us, we need to create a kind of society that enables us to live fairly and justly. Our people want to be able to engage in a job they like with equality and live socially. We are fighting for that”. Chanu Nimisha told Mojo News.

Commenting further to Mojo News, she said that psychologists all over the world have declared that homosexuality is not a disease and that truth is requested to be accepted.
