Cardinal Malcolm Ranjith invites everyone to come together to build a new Sri Lanka

“We must determine this year to build a new Sri Lanka with join hands with our brothers and sisters as much as we can through our lives. Although 75 years have passed since the independence of Sri Lanka, Sri Lankans have become slaves of the world today. It’s unfortunate.” says Colombo Archbishop Cardinal Malcolm Ranjith.

“If the current system is continued, Sri Lanka may be completely destroyed, economically degraded, and lost. I believe that we should not allow this country to be destroyed in this way with an intelligent and righteous attitude. Therefore, in this new year, we will protect our country. Let us determine to work together, courageously and selflessly to recover from this great destruction.” The Archbishop of Colombo Cardinal Malcolm asks in his New Year 2023 message.

He also says that we step to the new year with many hopes that are relevant to our lives, but we do not know whether they will be fulfilled or not, and we cannot make our lives beautiful by living without hope.

Even so, the lives of many people have turned into hopeless lives due to the disastrous economic situation that has happened in the current territory of Sri Lanka, therefore the Cardinal said that we should love the country in a special way this year.

“This year, Sri Lanka is celebrating its 75th year of independence. But today Sri Lanka is not where it should be. Several countries that gained independence with Sri Lanka are far ahead today. Those countries have progressed a lot in terms of social justice, brotherhood and unity. But due to the dangerous choices and extremist attitudes of the various leaders of our country, today we have fallen into the position of being called one of the poorest countries in the Asian region as well as the poorest country in the world.” His Holiness the Cardinal declares.

“Poverty is not only external poverty but internal.” The Cardinal, who also mentions poverty, says that they have become a kind of slaves and that even though 75 years have passed since Sri Lanka’s independence, it is very unfortunate that Sri Lankans have become slaves in the world today.

Therefore, “We must make a determination this year to join hands with our brothers and sisters as much as we can through our lives and build a new Sri Lanka. Otherwise, if the current system is continued, Sri Lanka may be completely destroyed, economically degraded and lost in the future,” said the Archbishop of Colombo Cardinal Malcolm Ranjith, addressing the Christian community in Sri Lanka through video technology.
