A court in Australia denied bail to Danushka Gunathilaka

Danushka Gunathilaka was refused bail after he was charged with raping a woman.
Gunathilaka’s lawyer suggested that the T20 World Cup player could appeal the bail decision.
A court refused bail to Gunathilaka after he was arrested at his hotel in the early hours of Sunday.
On Monday, the 31-year-old left-handed batsman asked the magistrate for a release, but the request was denied.
The cricketers’ lawyer Ananda Amaranath called the decision “disappointing,” and said his client was considering appealing to the New South Wales supreme court.
The police prosecutor granted an order suppressing the facts of the case against the 31-year-old, who made a bail application in a closed court.
Amaranath and senior counsel Stephen Combs for Nationwide News opposed the suppression motion.
Gunathilaka is accused of four counts of sexual intercourse without consent.
He appeared in handcuffs and a grey T-shirt via video link at the local court on Monday after spending a night in custody.
“Yes, my video link is working, he told the court.
Gunathilaka travelled to Australia with Sri Lanka’s T20 World Cup team but only played in the team’s first game, a loss against Namibia, before being ruled out of the competition with a hamstring tear.
The Sri Lankan national was holding up well in police custody, his lawyer told media outside court.
“He has the support of the Sri Lankan high commissioner”. Amaranath said that “he is okay”.
If Gunathilaka was found guilty in Australia, Sri Lanka Cricket would conduct its own inquiry, and he would be fined.
He has been suspended from all forms of cricket.
“Sri Lanka Cricket wishes to emphasize that it has a zero-tolerance policy for this type of conduct and will provide all the required support to the Australian law enforcement authorities to carry out an impartial inquiry”.
Gunathilaka has played in over 100 T20 and one-day internationals for Sri Lanka.
