Government & chambers objected to the multi-party protest going ahead

Representatives of the Government and leading business chambers yesterday called for the protest to be called off, despite the fact that the multi-party protest was going to attract a huge crowd.

The protest is expected to involve more than 20 political parties and 150 civil organizations and trade unions.However, the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) and the Supreme Lanka Coalition, which is made up of some of the MPs who left the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) recently and said they were “independent” MPs, will not take part in the protest.

Opposition leader Sajith Premadasa, Leader of the SJB, said that the SJB would give “200% support” to the protest today.

There are several business chambers in Sri Lanka, including the Chamber of Commerce, Chamber of Young Entrepreneurs, Federation of Chambers of Commerce and Industry, International Chamber of Commerce, National Chamber of Exporters, and Women’s Chamber, issued an statement and request to call of the protest.

“While acknowledging their freedom of speech and the right to express views, the chambers request all parties to call off protests of this nature that could undermine the efforts being taken to resolve the current economic crisis with the support of the international community The statement noted that any act of destabilization at this time would derail actions being taken to revive the economy, including the efforts being taken to promote tourism..

Representatives from several political parties, trade unions, student movements, and civil organizations, including SJB MP Mujibur Rahman, Samagi Vanitha Balawegaya National Organiser Hirunika Premachandra, SLFP Propaganda Secretary Thisara Gunasinghe, FSP Education Secretary Pubudu Jayagoda, Duminda Nagamuwa of the FSP, CTU General Secretary Joseph Stalin, IUSF Acting Convenor Terrance Rodrigo, civil activist Dhanizh Ali, and YJASL Secretary M.F.M. Fazeer attended a meeting where they all signed a joint statement.
