NDDCB warns of rising ‘Ice’ abuse among youth!

The National Dangerous Drugs Control Board (NDDCB) has sounded the alarm over a surge in the use of crystal methamphetamine, commonly known as ‘Ice’, across Sri Lanka.

According to Assistant Director of Research Thamara Darshana, more than 60,000 individuals addicted to the substance were arrested during the first ten months of this year alone.

While cannabis and heroin remain prevalent, the spike in ‘Ice’ usage is significantly more pronounced, particularly in the Colombo, Gampaha, Kalutara, and Kandy districts.

The NDDCB also highlighted a dangerous trend where 99% of drug users are now categorized as polydrug users, meaning they consume multiple types of narcotics simultaneously.

Authorities noted that young adults between the ages of 20 and 30 are the most vulnerable demographic.

As addiction rates climb, the Treatment and Rehabilitation Division is focusing on expanded outreach to combat the growing crisis.
