Sri Lanka – Cyclone Ditwah Response: Displacement snapshot: #2 (15 December 2025)

SITUATION OVERVIEW

The tropical cyclone Ditwah made landfall on Sri Lanka on 28 November, causing severe flooding, landslides and mudslides, triggering some of the most devastating flooding since the 2000s. Rainfall has continued across parts of Sri Lanka.

• As of 12 December 2025, DTM identified a total of 1,739,923 affected individuals, representing around 8 per cent of the total population. Of those affected, 239,493 were internally displaced, a 16 per cent decrease compared to 7 December. The DMC reported 847 safety centres (-143 compared to 7 December).

• DMC reported 640 deaths and 211 missing individuals. • A significant increase (+47%) in partially and fully damaged houses was recorded compared to 7 December.

• Despite government efforts to restore several primary road networks, transportation, markets and information networks remain disrupted. The health system is under pressure, with several district hospitals flooded and limited medical supplies.
