Rs. 620 Million in Advanced Medical Equipment Added to Kandy National Hospital

The Kandy National Hospital has received three advanced medical equipment systems worth a total of Rs. 620 million, Health and Mass Media Minister Dr. Nalinda Jayatissa said.

The equipment, officially commissioned yesterday  (15) under the Health and Mass Media Ministry’s programme to improve diagnostic and treatment services, includes a Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory worth Rs. 250 million, a Mammography Unit worth Rs. 180 million, and a CT Scanner System worth Rs. 190 million.

The equipment was commissioned under the Health System Enhancement Project, with financial assistance from the Asian Development Bank (ADB), in the presence of Health Deputy Minister Dr. Hansaka Wijemuni.

The new facilities include the second CT scanner and second Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory at the Kandy National Hospital. The hospital has also received one of the five most technologically advanced mammography machines currently available in Sri Lanka.

Minister Jayatissa said development projects worth more than Rs. 8 billion are currently being implemented at the Kandy National Hospital, including the construction and development of facilities such as the cancer unit and emergency treatment unit.

He further said a programme is underway to establish 16 Cardiac Catheterization Laboratories in hospitals across the country this year, with the new facility at Kandy National Hospital being part of the programme.

The Minister noted that the Kandy National Hospital has one of the largest patient waiting lists among hospitals in the country and said the new equipment would help reduce waiting times and make diagnostic and treatment services more efficient.

The hospital, which has around 2,800 beds, provides tertiary healthcare services to a large number of people and is the country’s second national hospital.
