Minor flood alert issued for Nilwala River and Gin Ganga lowlands
The Irrigation Department has warned of a possible minor flood situation in low-lying areas of the Nilwala River and Gin Ganga valleys following heavy rainfall in the upstream and middle-reach catchment areas today.
In the Nilwala River basin, hydrological analysis indicates a potential flood within the next 24 hours in Pasgoda, Kotapola, Pitabeddara, Akuressa, Athuraliya, Malimbada, Kamburupitiya, and Thihagoda D.S. Divisions. Residents and motorists in these areas have been advised to remain vigilant, while disaster management authorities are urged to take necessary precautions.
Similarly, the Gin Ganga Basin recorded considerable rainfall by 9.00 PM today. Low-lying areas in Neluwa, Thawalama, Nagoda, Niyagama, Welivitiya-Divithura, Elpitiya, and Akmeemana D.S. Divisions face a potential minor flood within the next 14 hours. Local residents and vehicle operators have been warned to exercise caution, and authorities have been asked to implement safety measures.
The Department stressed the importance of monitoring river levels closely and adhering to instructions from disaster management teams.
