Inaugural Session of Student Parliament of Mahamaya Girls’ College, Kandy Held at Presidential Secretariat

The inaugural session of the Student Parliament of Mahamaya Girls’ College, Kandy was held yesterday (28) at the historic Old Parliament Chamber of the Presidential Secretariat, under the patronage of Prime Minister Dr. Harini Amarasuriya.

This event was organized in line with the “Vision” programme series jointly implemented by the Presidential Secretariat, the Ministry of Education, Higher Education and Vocational Education and the Parliamentary Department of Communication.

During the session, the students were educated on leadership skills, the history and traditions of the parliamentary system, the functions of Parliament and the current activities of the President’s Fund. Following the ceremonial opening, the election and swearing-in of the Speaker and Members of the Student Parliament also took place.

A special memento was presented to Prime Minister Dr. Harini Amarasuriya by Principal of Mahamaya Girls’ College, Shashikala Senadheera. Certificates were also awarded to the participating student parliamentarians in recognition of their engagement.

Speaking at the event, the Prime Minister noted that the government’s on-going education reforms aim to prepare the younger generation for global knowledge acquisition and to nurture a future generation empowered with strength, integrity and a sense of national responsibility.

The Prime Minister highlighted that these reforms are not only aimed at employment-oriented education but also at fostering a new generation that can lead society and contribute to global transformation, which is a crucial requirement for the country’s advancement.

The Prime Minister further emphasized that eliminating the inequality in the distribution of educational resources among schools remains a key government objective, stressing that the involvement of citizens, as well as the ideas and suggestions of students, is vital in achieving this goal.

In parallel with this programme, the Prime Minister also presented valuable saplings to the school as a symbolic gift, affirming the importance of environmental conservation and presented the ‘Vision’ magazine to the school.

Among those present were Deputy Speaker of Parliament Dr. Rizvie Salih, Senior Additional Secretary to the President Roshan Gamage, Deputy Secretary-General and Chief of Staff of Parliament, Chaminda Kularatne, Professor A. Sarwesvaran , Faculty of Law, University of Colombo, Director General of Public Relations to the President, Dharmasiri Gamage and Major Nadika Dangolla, Assistant Director of the Tri-Forces Coordination Unit of the Presidential Secretariat, along with teachers and other invitees.
