Govt. decided to promote brown sugar among the general public
To boost the demand for the product and support the livelihoods of factory workers, sugarcane farmers, and service providers linked to the local industry, it stated that the Cabinet approval has been granted to make it mandatory for all state institutions to use brown sugar in food production.
The decision is expected to boost demand for the product and support the livelihoods of factory workers, sugarcane farmers, and service providers linked to the local industry.
The government has taken steps to promote the use of locally produced brown sugar among the general public, aiming to strengthen and sustain the country’s domestic sugar industry, the Government Information Department said yesterday, 14th October.
The Pelawatta and Sevanagala sugar factories, operating under Lanka Sugar Company (Private) Limited, annually produce around 56,000 metric tons of brown sugar. However, due to an improved sugarcane harvest this year, production has exceeded the usual output.
According to the government, the decision will not only help expand the local market for brown sugar but also ensure the sustainable growth of the domestic sugar sector.
Under the new directive, institutions such as the Tri-Forces, Sri Lanka Police, Department of Prisons, and government hospitals will be required to use only brown sugar in their food production.
In addition, Lanka Sathosa Limited has been authorized to purchase brown sugar directly from Lanka Sugar Company (Private) Limited and sell it to consumers.
The proposal was presented to the Cabinet by the Minister of Industries and Enterprise Development and received formal approval this week.
