Keheliya Rambukwella and Others Granted Bail in Substandard Drug Import Case
Former Health Minister Keheliya Rambukwella and several co-defendants, indicted over the alleged misappropriation of government funds through the purchase of substandard human immunoglobulin vials during the previous government, were released on bail by the Colombo High Court yesterday (16).
A three-judge bench ordered that each defendant be granted bail on a cash deposit of Rs. 500,000 and two surety bonds of Rs. 5 million. The court further imposed a foreign travel ban on the accused and directed them to surrender their passports.
Earlier in the day, the indictments against Rambukwella and the other defendants were formally presented before the Colombo High Court bench. Deputy Solicitor General Lakmini Girihagama informed the court that the Attorney General opposed granting bail.
Following lengthy submissions made by the defense attorneys, the bench comprising Justices Mahesh Weeraman, Pradeep Abeyratne, and Amali Ranaweera delivered the order, rejecting the Attorney General’s objection and granting bail to the accused.
