Meeting between the Human Rights Commissioner and Minister Vijitha Herath
Minister Vijitha Herath met with the High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Turk in Geneva yesterday (10) and informed him that the government is ready to enter into a process of accountability for human rights violations in Sri Lanka through a domestic mechanism only, with the technical assistance of the Human Rights Council.
A meeting was held between Minister Vijitha Herath, who is in Geneva to participate in the 60th session of the Human Rights Council, and the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Turk yesterday (10). There was a lengthy discussion regarding the report submitted by Volker Turk.
Minister Vijitha Herath has explained Sri Lanka’s position regarding the report in detail.
The UN High Commissioner for Human Rights has expressed his hope that a new turn has been taken in the protection of human rights in Sri Lanka under the new government and that this opportunity will not be missed to conduct an independent investigation into past human rights violations and to properly establish an accountability mechanism.
