200,000 Sri Lankans have left for work abroad in the first 8 months of the year
The Foreign Employment Bureau says that more than 200,000 Sri Lankan workers have left for work abroad in the past 8 months of this year.
Accordingly, 212,302 people have left for work abroad, the bureau said.
The number of male workers going abroad has increased significantly compared to female workers during this period.
Accordingly, the number of male workers who have gone abroad is 130,252, while 82,050 female workers have gone abroad for work.
The majority of Sri Lankan workers have gone abroad for work, with 53,159.
Meanwhile, the Sri Lankan Bureau of Foreign Employment states that Sri Lankans working abroad have sent remittances worth US$ 5.11 billion to the country in the first 8 months of 2025.
The amount of remittances sent by overseas workers to the country in the first 8 months of 2024 was US$ 4.28 billion, compared to which, remittance receipts in 2025 have increased by 19.30 percent.
Similarly, in August 2025 alone, Sri Lankan workers have sent remittances worth US$ 680.80 million to the country.
The Sri Lanka Bureau of Foreign Employment is confident that the country will receive foreign remittances worth US$ 7 billion in 2025.
