Environment Minister assures : roads will not be allowed to be built through Sinharaja
Environment Minister Dr. Dhammika Patabendi says that under the government’s policy to protect the environment, roads will not be allowed to be built in the Sinharaja forest.
“There is a government policy to protect the environment. Under that, the government will not take any action that will destroy the Sinharaja forest.”
The Minister is reported to have made these comments in response to a question posed by a journalist regarding a proposal to repair the road from Sinharaja Iluma Kanda to Suriyakanda.
A proposal regarding the construction of the road has been submitted to the Regional Development Committee, and accordingly, a group of officials has gone to inspect the area, resulting in a discussion, the Minister has stated.
