Resolution to remove IGP Deshabandu Tennakoon from office to be debated in Parliament today

The resolution to remove Inspector General of Police Deshabandu Tennakoon from office in terms of Section 17 of the Removal of Officers (Procedure) Act, No. 5 of 2002, will be taken up for debate in Parliament today, 05th August.

Parliament on 08 April 2025 passed Resolution No. P.29/2025, which appeared in the Order Paper of Parliament dated 08.04.2025. A Committee of Inquiry (hereinafter referred to as the ‘Committee’) was appointed under Section 5(2) and Section 6(b) of the Removal of Officers (Procedure) Act, No. 5 of 2002, to inquire into and report its findings regarding the allegations in the said resolution. The committee apparently found Tennakoon guilty of the charges.

Tennakoon will be the first IGP to be removed from office through a resolution in Parliament.
