Special trains and security measures for Poson pilgrims

In view of the Poson Poya religious observances, Sri Lanka Railways has launched a series of special train services from yesterday (9 June) to accommodate the large number of devotees travelling to the sacred cities of Anuradhapura and Mihintale.
According to the Department of Railways, 20 special trains will operate between Colombo Fort and Anuradhapura, while 36 additional services will run free of charge between Anuradhapura and Mihintale.
These services will continue until 12 June to manage the heavy pilgrim flow during this important Buddhist festival. Return trains from Anuradhapura have also been arranged throughout the festive period to ensure safe and convenient travel for devotees.
In parallel, Sri Lanka Police have deployed nearly 3,500 officers under a special security and traffic management operation that also commenced on 9 June. The operation focuses on maintaining public order, managing traffic, providing life-saving assistance near water bodies, and strengthening security through undercover duties.
Acting Police Spokesman ASP F.U. Wootler stated that officers have been stationed across key locations in Anuradhapura and Mihintale with clear instructions to prioritise the safety of pilgrims and provide necessary assistance. He also urged devotees to remain vigilant with their personal belongings, keep sacred sites clean, avoid the use of plastic and polythene, and cooperate with police officers at all times.
To reduce congestion and ensure orderly movement within the sacred city, a special traffic plan has been introduced, and several designated parking areas have been established across Anuradhapura. Drivers have been advised to use only these official parking locations to support the smooth flow of vehicles and enhance the overall pilgrimage experience.
