Sri Lanka’s 75th independence anniversary celebrations, the first since President Ranil Wickremesinghe was chosen to lead the government, were held today at Galle Face Green urban park. However, the local church objected and criticized the exorbitant costs spent on the ceremony, while police violently suppressed demonstrations by activists.
