All Citizens Aged 18 and Above Required to Obtain TIN
Every citizen who has reached the age of 18 is required to obtain a Taxpayer Identification Number (TIN) under a gazette notification issued in 2023, Commissioner of the Inland Revenue Department Nandana Kumara said.
He made these remarks at a media briefing held today (19) at the Department of Government Information to raise awareness about the deadline for submitting income tax returns for the 2025/2026 year of assessment.
He clarified that obtaining a TIN does not mean that every individual must register for income tax or pay income tax.
According to the Commissioner, individuals whose annual income exceeds Rs. 1.8 million are required to register for income tax in accordance with the relevant legal provisions.
Those whose annual income is below this threshold may request the cancellation of their individual income tax registration by submitting an application accompanied by an affidavit.
He urged taxpayers to submit their income tax returns for the 2025/2026 year of assessment on time and fulfil their responsibilities as citizens.
