National Disaster Preparedness Drill in Bingiriya!

A national disaster preparedness drill organised jointly by the Disaster Management Centre and the Kurunegala District Secretariat was held throughout the day on Thursday, 01st of October, in the  Hettulawa area of Bingiriya.

The programme focused on preparedness and response measures in the event of a sudden flood in the Hettulawa area, particularly due to rising water levels in the Deduru Oya, with the aim of minimising the impact on the public and improving emergency response procedures.

The exercise covered a range of activities, from preparing the public for a disaster situation to evacuating people to safe locations, carrying out rescue operations and providing assistance at relief centres.

Officials from the Kurunegala District Disaster Management Unit, Bingiriya Divisional Secretariat, Sri Lanka Army, Sri Lanka Navy, Bingiriya Police and hospital staff, along with several other government institutions, participated in the programme.

Police life-saving officers from Nikaweratiya and residents of the area also took part in the exercise.

Special attention was also given to improving coordination among relevant institutions and strengthening their ability to respond promptly during an emergency. Measures to support the psychological well-being of children and elderly people staying at relief centres were also discussed during the programme.

Kurunegala District Deputy Director of Disaster Management Viraj Dissanayake said that attention should be given not only to the physical safety of people during a disaster but also to their psychological well-being.
