Grama Niladharis launch sick leave campaign!
Grama Niladharis (GN) have decided to report sick leave and refrain from attending work today (10) and tomorrow (11), claiming the Government has failed to increase their travel allowance and provide solutions to several other unresolved demands.
Grama Niladhari Trade Union Alliance (GNTUA) Chairperson Nandana Ranasinghe announced the decision at a media briefing held in Colombo yesterday (9).
“The Rs 600 travel allowance paid to us has not been increased for eight years. Cabinet approval was granted in 2024 to replace the allowance with an amount equivalent to the cost of 20 litres of fuel. However, the revised allowance has still not been provided. We were waiting for the Government to look into these issues and provide solutions. However, it did not happen, and this is the last option we had to resort to,” he said.
Public Administration Minister Prof. Chandana Abayarathna and Deputy subject Minister Prabha Ruwan Senarath were not available for comment.
