Mahara Prison – Visits to inmates suspended for 3 days!
Mahara Prison Superintendent Rohana Galappaththi stated that, following the disturbance at Mahara Prison yesterday afternoon, visits to inmates have been suspended for three days, starting tomorrow (August 3rd), and will resume as usual from next Thursday (August 6th).
He also said that the magistrate visited the prison today and conducted relevant observations, and investigations have been initiated into the incident.
“A list of the inmates who have been hospitalized due to the unrest that has erupted at Mahara Prison since yesterday afternoon, and a list of the inmates who have been transferred to other prisons on suspicion of being involved in the unrest, has been displayed at the main entrance to the prison”, Prison Superintendent Rohana Galappaththi told the media.
The number of inmates who have been transferred is 104. He also informed that visits to the inmates have been suspended for three days starting tomorrow (August 03), and that the inmates’ relatives need not be concerned in any way.
The Superintendent also said that due to the rioting incident that occurred yesterday, extensive property damage has occurred and several inmates have been injured, and one inmate has died.
