Global Cooperation Key to Economic Recovery and Climate Action – Minister Bimal Rathnayake
Minister of Transport, Highways and Urban Development Bimal Rathnayake called for stronger global cooperation to support economic recovery and address the growing challenges of climate change while addressing the 5th Xizang (Tibet) Trans-Himalaya Forum for International Cooperation held in Linzhi, China, from July 16 to 18.
Speaking as a keynote speaker at the forum, held under the theme “Harmony Between Humanity and Nature – Sharing the Benefits of Development,” the Minister said mountain ranges should be viewed as bridges that connect nations rather than barriers that divide them, fostering regional cooperation and shared development.
He reaffirmed Sri Lanka’s commitment to strengthening its longstanding friendship with China under the leadership of President Anura Kumara Dissanayake and reiterated the country’s continued support for the One China Policy and the Belt and Road Initiative.
The Minister also highlighted the potential to expand bilateral cooperation in transport, logistics, the digital economy, sustainable tourism, and green energy. He stressed that no country can overcome today’s global challenges, from economic recovery to climate change, on its own and called for nations to work together for mutual benefit and a sustainable future.
On the sidelines of the forum, Minister Rathnayake held discussions with Xu Zhiwen, Standing Committee Member of the Party Committee of the Xizang Autonomous Region, on enhancing cooperation between Sri Lanka and Xizang in culture, environmental conservation, sustainable tourism, and climate change.
