Former IGP C.D. Wickramaratne was found dead at his residence!

Former Inspector General of Police (IGP) C.D. Wickramaratne was found dead from gunshot wounds at his residence this morning, the 17th of July, 2026.

Police Spokesperson Assistant Superintendent of Police F.U. Wootler confirmed that the former police chief was found at his residence in Thalahena with a fatal gunshot wound from his service firearm.

Aged 63, the former IGP’s remains have been placed at the Mulleriyawa Hospital.  C.D. Wickramaratne, who served in the Sri Lanka Police for more than 30 years, was the country’s 35th Inspector General of Police.

Before he was appointed IGP, Wickramaratne served as the Senior Deputy Inspector General of Police for the Southern Province.

Following the Easter Sunday bomb attacks and the subsequent compulsory leave imposed on then-IGP Pujith Jayasundara, Wickramaratne was appointed as the Acting Inspector General of Police.

He was later confirmed as Inspector General of Police on November 25, 2020, and continued in the position until his retirement on November 25, 2023.
