Sri Lanka Reaffirms Commitment to International Nuclear Safety Standards – Minister Krishantha Abeysena

Sri Lanka remains firmly committed to upholding international standards on nuclear safety and security, Minister of Science and Technology Professor Krishantha Abeysena said.

He made these remarks while inaugurating the Regional Training Workshop on Introduction to Nuclear Forensics, jointly organized by the Sri Lanka Atomic Energy Regulatory Council (SLAERC) and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), in Colombo on Monday (July 13). The workshop, held at the Ramada Hotel, will continue until July 17.

Organized under the Integrated Nuclear Security Support Plan (INSSP), the programme aims to strengthen nuclear forensic knowledge and national response capabilities for investigating crimes and unauthorized activities involving nuclear or other radioactive materials.

The Minister noted that, amid growing global risks associated with the illicit use of nuclear and radioactive materials, nuclear forensics plays a vital role in investigating incidents, identifying the origin of radioactive materials, and supporting law enforcement authorities.

He also emphasized that regional training programmes of this nature help strengthen nuclear security, enhance cooperation among countries, and improve preparedness to address threats involving nuclear and radioactive materials.
