Planned medical strike temporarily suspended!

The Government Medical Officers Association has announced that an island-wide strike scheduled to commence from 8.00 am today (31) has been temporarily suspended.

The decision was taken following the agreements reached during a special discussion held last night (30) between the Minister of Health, Dr. Nalinda Jayatissa, the Director General of Health Services and the Government Medical Officers Association, the association said in a statement.

The association said that it had agreed to suspend the transfers of doctors that the Ministry of Health had attempted to implement arbitrarily in violation of the accepted methodology, and instead implement the transfers of doctors with a time frame through the accepted methodology. It also stated that it had agreed to confirm these agreements at a special discussion of the administrative doctors of the Ministry of Health to be held today.

Accordingly, considering the above agreements, it has been decided to temporarily extend the strike announced by the Executive Council of the Government Medical Officers’ Association until the relevant agreements are confirmed and received in writing during the discussion with the Administrative Doctors of the Ministry of Health.

The Government Medical Officers’ Association further states that if the above agreements are not implemented, it has been decided to resume the strike at any time.
