Government has no control over law and order: Namal

Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) MP Namal Rajapaksa has voiced concern over the recent spate of killings across the country, warning that law and order appear to be slipping out of government control.

In an X post, Rajapaksa said that while some National People’s Power (NPP) ministers claim that daily shootings have ceased, killings continue to resurface “as and when it suits certain groups,” with the government hastily attributing them to underworld and drug-related activities.

“Despite these claims, hardly anyone has been arrested for these murders. The fact that people are taking the law into their own hands, and the government has no control over law and order, is worrying,” he said.

He added that if the NPP administration is genuinely committed to “system change and development,” its first priority should be ensuring the safety of citizens.

“With the rising killings, no one seems to be safe anymore,” Rajapaksa said.

As such, he urged the government to provide security to all opposition politicians, including local councilors engaged in public service.

He further called on authorities to strengthen security at public offices in all provinces to safeguard councilors and officers, particularly those representing opposition parties.
