Tourist driving licence creates issues for local livelihoods

Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna National Organiser MP Namal Rajapaksa has expressed concern over the government’s proposal to issue driving licences on arrival to tourists visiting Sri Lanka, questioning how the government reached such a decision without consulting all relevant stakeholders.
“There is an agreement in place in Sri Lanka that allows those who already have international driving licences to drive here. But it should be limited to them only,” he said.
Namal Rajapaksa, who posted on his Twitter account, pointed out that the tourism industry is supported by thousands of tour guides and taxi operators, and that their livelihoods could be at risk if the decision is implemented without proper consultation.
Namal Rajapaksa has also stated on his Twitter account that he has received numerous complaints from tour guides and taxi operators who are urging the government to engage in extensive discussions before moving forward with a move that could have adverse effects on the tourism sector.
