‘Let’s protest the bill that gives an analog answer to a digital question – Dr. Ranga Kalansuriya’

“I filed a petition in the Supreme Court yesterday (Oct 09) to protest the Online Security Act, i.e. the Social Media Regulation Act, which is currently tabled in Parliament.” told the media Dr. Ranga Kalansuriya.
“Three separate petitions were filed. One was my petition. The petition of Mr. Vijayananda Jayaweera, the former director of UNESCO, and a petition was filed by the Media Law Forum.” said Dr. Ranga Kalansuriya.

Dr. Ranga Kalansooriya mentioned that these petitions were submitted in order to get the decision of the honorable Supreme Court that it should be decided that it is not in accordance with the constitution or should be amended, pointing out the shortcomings of the presented act.
Dr. Kalansuriya, who called this bill an analog answer to a digital problem, pointed out that it is a bill that not only hinders the freedom of speech but also the freedom of thought of people without any understanding of the digital world.

Dr. Kalansuriya stated that Minister Tiran Alas, who brought the bill to the fore, himself accepted that this bill was a bill that came without any consultation and that it is flawed.
Minister Tiran Alas also said that a bill exchanged between three ministers was then handed over to him by the cabinet to take forward.
Minister Alas has stated that he has agreed to fix the deficiencies in this draft to a certain extent through a court action or to prepare the next steps.
“This bill is a bill that will have a big impact on journalists, social media users, and everyone who goes to media companies. In particular, it will reach a point where people will not even be able to put a like on Facebook. This country should not go to such a situation.” he said.
He also mentioned that last year in countries like Pakistan, 26 journalists were jailed in this law and criminal charges were brought against them.
He said that clearly, in this effort, the media organizations will inevitably get caught and become criminals, so he said that he intervened in this.

He further said that 12 or 13 petitions have been filed against this bill so far and it is hoped that more petitions will be filed this week.

Dr. Ranga Kalansuriya also said that he would request the public to read and understand this bill and express their protest through social media.
