The day is Tomorrow! A complaint on rights!

A group of representatives of several civil organizations are submitting a complaint to the Sri Lanka Human Rights Commission regarding an incident of not providing hall facilities for the International Human Rights Day celebrations scheduled to be held tomorrow, December 10.

They said that although they had booked the hall facilities of the Bandaranaike Memorial International Conference Hall (BMICH) for the celebration of the relevant Human Rights Day, they had suddenly canceled it yesterday i.e. December 08 and had informed the Bandaranaike Conference Hall that they were ready to refund the money.

Speaking to the media, after presenting the complaint, Joseph Starling, the union leader and the secretary of the Ceylon Teachers’ Union, said that “we had paid and booked the Bandaranaike Conference Hall to hold the World Human Rights Day on December 10, which is tomorrow. All arrangements were made. The President of the Sri Lanka Bar Association Saliya Peiris as the two main speakers and a number of civil activists including Professor Arjuna Parakrama representing the universities will speak at this celebration.” he said.

He also said that there are no political party speeches in it and that there are plans to present a number of messages from international human rights organizations.

“We ask, what is the point if we cannot even celebrate Human Rights Day at BMICH? Clearly, we see this as a conspiracy by the Ranil-Rajapaksa government,” he said.
